Job Description:

Key Responsibilities

  • IMS System Administration:
    • Install, configure, and upgrade IMS software and related products.
    • Define and manage IMS system parameters, control blocks, and datasets.
    • Administer IMS subsystems, including control regions, database resource adapters (DRAs), and online terminals.
    • Perform IMS system startup and shutdown procedures.
    • Apply maintenance and PTFs using SMP/E.
  • IMS Database Management:
    • Design, create, and maintain IMS databases (HDAM, HIDAM, HISAM, HSAM).
    • Define and manage database segments, fields, and relationships.
    • Implement database backup and recovery procedures using IMS utilities (DFSURDBU, DFSURestore).
    • Perform database reorganization and performance tuning.
    • Monitor database space utilization and manage database growth.
  • IMS Transaction Management:
    • Define and manage IMS transactions, programs, and message queues.
    • Configure and support IMS online transaction processing (OLTP) environments.
    • Implement transaction routing and security.
    • Monitor transaction performance and troubleshoot issues.
  • Performance Monitoring and Tuning:
    • Monitor IMS system and database performance using monitoring tools (e.g., Omegamon, MainView).
    • Analyze performance data and identify bottlenecks.
    • Implement performance tuning measures to optimize IMS system and application performance.
    • Manage buffer pools, storage, and other system resources.
  • Problem Determination and Resolution:
    • Diagnose and resolve IMS system and application problems.
    • Analyze dumps and logs to identify root causes.
    • Work with IBM support to resolve complex issues.
    • Implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Security and Compliance:
    • Implement and enforce IMS security policies and procedures.
    • Manage user access and authorization.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and security standards.
  • Backup and Recovery:
    • Develop, implement, and test IMS database and system backup and recovery strategies.
    • Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing.
  • Documentation and Standards:
    • Create and maintain technical documentation, including system configurations, procedures, and standards.
    • Adhere to established ITIL processes and change management procedures.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with application development teams to design and implement efficient IMS database solutions.
    • Collaborate with other infrastructure teams (e.g., z/OS, storage, network) to ensure seamless integration of IMS systems.
    • Provide technical support and guidance to application programmers and other IT staff.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in mainframe IMS administration.
  • Strong understanding of IMS architecture, database administration, and system programming concepts.
  • Proficiency in z/OS operating system and JCL.
  • Knowledge of IMS performance tuning and optimization techniques.
  • Experience with data security and compliance standards.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
