Applied Physics internship: advanced diagnostics of image sensors

Introduction

The ASML EUV Image Sensor team is responsible for delivering cutting-edge image sensors to qualify the EUV light that is used to expose patterns on wafers. We are a motivated team of engineers and architects. We have an interesting internship assignment to provide you with hands-on experience in analyzing data derived from parallel image sensors, specifically focusing on correlating camera signal-based measurement with the performance and behaviors of associated subsystems.

Your Assignment

A lithography system is a complex but precise imaging system. Such a system consists of complex interactions between multiple subsystems such as optics, sensor modules, stages, thermal management, vacuum system and power delivery. Understanding how variations/noise in subsystems behavior impact the captured signal is critical for improving image quality, reliability and performance. You will assist in analyzing large datasets containing image sensor outputs and correlate these with subsystems logs (e.g. temperature, voltage, stage movement, timing etc.) to help pinpoint the source of the noise. Your main tasks will include:

  • Process and clean data from image sensor and supporting subsystems;
  • Apply statistical and signal processing techniques to extract meaningful patterns;
  • Develop scripts/tools (python, MATLAB or similar) for automated data analysis;
  • Perform exploratory and correlation analysis to identify interdependencies;
  • Visualize results using appropriate plotting and reporting tools;
  • Documents findings and support engineering teams with actionable insight, develop test plan to gather more data if needed;

The expected outcomes of this internship are:

  • A clear mapping of how sensor signal characteristics vary with subsystem conditions
  • Identification of anomalies or failure patterns linked to specific behavior
  • Improved workflow for ongoing sensor performance validation and direction towards diagnostics capabilities

This is a Master graduation/apprentice internship for around 6 months, working 4-5 days per week (3 days onsite). The start date of this internship is as soon as possible, or the latest around September 2025.

Your Profile

To be a fit for this assignment, you:

  • Are currently pursuing a Master's in Applied Physics, Engineering or a related field;
  • Are proficient in data analysis tools (Python or MATLAB);
  • Are familiar with image sensors or signal processing (a plus);
  • Possess good analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Have good communication skills in English (verbal and written).

Other requirements you need to meet:

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
  • You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;
  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
